The attorney general's office gives legal opinions to state and local officials when requested. These files contain inquiry letters and carbon copies of the attorney general's replies. These are the only extant copies of much of this material. These records differ from formal opinions, which are published quarterly by the attorney general. The files also contain reply letters responding to private citizens' inquiries. Some of the files were microfilmed randomly.
